You are listening to excerpts of "MINAS, GERAIS", the new CD by Brazilian musician and composer Carlos Henrique Pereira.
The record features Carlos playing both piano and acoustic guitar on eleven original compositions. It was produced and recorded in his hometown of Juiz de Fora and on it he is accompanied by some of the best musicians from the city.
The music is a passage not only through his home state of Minas Gerais, but also through the "Mineiro" way of playing...
Minas Gerais has long been known for being the birthplace of innovation in music. Carlos represents a generation of instrumentalists that brings together the traditions of the past that are the hallmark of Brazilian jazz, and carries it in new directions.
Like few other musicians, Carlos excels on both the piano and the guitar. He pushes the nylon string guitar, the instrument that gave the subtle allure to bossa nova, to new places that aren’t traditionally heard in Brazilian music.
He also incorporates traditional Brazilian rhythms, like maracatu and frevo, in new and surprising ways. As a composer, he integrates improvisation with the richness of Brazilian rhythms without loosing authenticity. In the same way, he seamlessly mixes the lyricism of the music from Minas with the cerebral aspect of jazz.
The CD can be heard in its entirety on the "MUSIC" page.
This project received funds from the Murilo Mendes Cultural Incentive Law of the city of Juiz de Fora, MG.

"...Carlos' guitar playing is deft. His touch is light, his tone full but not heavy, and his taste is impeccable. His piano
... is earthier, thoughtful...and the seams are precisely where his music is interesting - when one part of the dualism places
the other in relief and we are left with a picture of why both are meaningful on their own terms..."
